Understanding the Abortion Pill

It is important to have accurate information before making a decision about your pregnancy. Understanding how the abortion pill works, potential risks and side effects, and what to expect can help you make an informed choice for your health and future.

At Desert Rose Women’s Resource Center, we believe every woman deserves access to information, support, and resources when facing an unexpected pregnancy.

What Is the Abortion Pill?

The term “abortion pill” commonly refers to a medication abortion that uses two drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol. These medications work together to end an existing pregnancy during the early weeks.

Mifepristone- blocks progesterone, a hormone necessary for pregnancy to continue. Misoprostol- taken 48hrs after and causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy tissue.

The abortion pill is different from the plan B “morning-after pill.” Emergency contraception taken to prevent pregnancy before it occurs, while the abortion pill is used after pregnancy has already been established.

What are the steps to taking the Abortion Pill?

The abortion pill process generally involves the following steps:

  1. Confirmation of pregnancy
  2. An Ultrasound (determination of gestational age, location of pregnancy and viability)
  3. Taking mifepristone
  4. Taking misoprostol as directed
  5. Experiencing bleeding and contractions as the pregnancy passes
  6. Follow-up care to confirm the abortion is complete

Before taking the abortion pill, it is important to verify how far along you are and whether the pregnancy is located within the uterus. An ultrasound can provide critical information that may impact your options and healthcare decisions.

Abortion Pill Risk and Side Effects

  • Cramping, contractions
  • Vaginal bleeding and hemorrhage
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • dizziness
  • infection
  • Abortion failure (incomplete abortion)
  • Fever or chills

The intensity and duration of symptoms can vary from person to person. If severe symptoms occur, immediate medical attention may be necessary.

Why an Ultrasound Matters Before Taking the Abortion Pill

An ultrasound may help determine:

  • Whether the pregnancy is viable (1-4 pregnancies do not carry to term)
  • The gestational age of the pregnancy (FDA recommends not taking over 10wks)
  • Whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus (rule out ectopic pregnancy)
  • Whether there are factors that could affect your health or treatment options

Having this information can help you better understand your situation and make a fully informed decision.

Questions to Ask Before Choosing the Abortion Pill

Before moving forward, consider asking:

  • How far along is my pregnancy?
  • What are the risks and side effects?
  • What should I expect during the process?
  • Whom can I have with me when I take the second pill?
  • What follow-up care will I need?
  • What other pregnancy options are available?

Taking time to gather information can help you feel more confident about your next steps.
