What Is the Abortion Pill?
The term “abortion pill” commonly refers to a medication abortion that uses two drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol. These medications work together to end an existing pregnancy during the early weeks.
Mifepristone- blocks progesterone, a hormone necessary for pregnancy to continue. Misoprostol- taken 48hrs after and causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy tissue.
The abortion pill is different from the plan B “morning-after pill.” Emergency contraception taken to prevent pregnancy before it occurs, while the abortion pill is used after pregnancy has already been established.
What are the steps to taking the Abortion Pill?
The abortion pill process generally involves the following steps:
- Confirmation of pregnancy
- An Ultrasound (determination of gestational age, location of pregnancy and viability)
- Taking mifepristone
- Taking misoprostol as directed
- Experiencing bleeding and contractions as the pregnancy passes
- Follow-up care to confirm the abortion is complete
Before taking the abortion pill, it is important to verify how far along you are and whether the pregnancy is located within the uterus. An ultrasound can provide critical information that may impact your options and healthcare decisions.

- Vaginal bleeding and hemorrhage

- Fatigue

- Abortion failure (incomplete abortion)

Why an Ultrasound Matters Before Taking the Abortion Pill
An ultrasound may help determine:
- Whether the pregnancy is viable (1-4 pregnancies do not carry to term)
- The gestational age of the pregnancy (FDA recommends not taking over 10wks)
- Whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus (rule out ectopic pregnancy)
